By making the senior student our focus, we are able to better understand the learning style and needs of advanced age learners. I have tailored and continue to finesse our class offerings, curriculum and teaching style to what these students want and need.
Our classes engage all senses, to address the fact that people have different learning styles. In addition to teacher instruction, we incorporate slides and videos, worksheets and handouts, Q&A time, group discussion, online instruction in real time, product demonstrations, games, etc.
Each class is intentionally kept “short and sweet” so as not to overwhelm and discourage our students. We have chosen to do class series format as opposed to 1 long class. We give our students materials to take to reference and provide an email address so they can ask us questions when they are working on their new skills on their own.
We start the class with 5 minutes to clear our mind, take regular stretch and restroom breaks and provide healthy snacks. Our classroom is a safe space, with no judgement allowed. We promote a very supportive atmosphere, encouraging students to joke, laugh and cheer one another on. We allow students to learn at their own pace, and provide extra time after class to assist students one-on-one if they desire.
